Johnny Harold Blase, 84, a resident of Duncanville, Texas, passed away peacefully on 15 September 2025, having battled cancer like a true Marine and living an extraordinary life.
Born at an early age in Hamilton, Texas, Johnny served proudly in the Marine Corps before pursuing an Engineering degree at North Texas University. It was there he met the red headed love of his life, Mary Margaret Cunningham, whom he married in 1965.
They were blessed with two children, whom they raised with love and a strong side-eye. While Johnny worked as a freight engineer, his true passion lay in art. He began by teaching himself to oil-paint while nursing a broken foot and unable to work. This led to other talents such as sculpting, samurai sword making, and incredible wood workmanship. Later in life he discovered his highest passion, ceramics, in which he was truly gifted. Johnny never stopped learning and added watercolors to his repertoire, creating mini masterpieces with his beloved sister and devoted caregiver, Anna Davis.
Johnny was a storyteller extraordinaire and in the telling of his adventures on land and water, (motorcycle, canoe, running) would draw you in with his depictions of winning against-all-odds races, real life rescues and survival, and daring motorcycle rides, so much so that one would swear they were with him when it happened.
Remaining to cherish Johnny's memory are his children, John Andrew Blase and Alexandria Blase, his brothers Ron Blase and his wife Linda of Denton, Texas John C. Whitehead and his wife Sandi of Louisiana, and his sister Anna Davis of Duncanville, Texas as well as his two grandchildren, Maya and Binyamin.
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Margaret Cunningham, his parents, Clovis Whitehead (nee Henderson) and her husband James E. Whitehead, Jr., his father, John Henry Blase. Brother-in-law Tommy Cunningham, and nephew Jeremy Michael Frie.
The memorial service will be held at 3:15 on October 9 at the DFW National Cemetary followed by a gathering at VFW 7843 off of Hwy 67 in Duncanville, TX
