Pastor George Windrey Battle, 96, of Roanoke, TX; on the afternoon of April 28, 2020, while at his residence and surrounded by his beloved wife Louise and daughter Linda, quietly slipped away to be with the Lord. Rev. Battle was born on September 15, 1923, to the late Andrew and Letitia Battle in Boston, MA.

He attended the public schools in Cambridge, MA, and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin. He served stateside in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. After serving in the military, he attended Wilberforce University in Ohio, America’s first private HBCU, founded in 1856. His sweetheart Louise D Alexander moved to Ohio to be near him while he studied. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree. They were later married January 3, 1952.

George and Louise moved to Dorchester, MA. George continued his studies earning a Master of Education Degree from Boston State College. During his lifetime, he wore many hats. He worked as a ship welder at the Boston Navy Yard, taught Science and Math at Medford High School, he later worked for the federal government doing research at the Arsenal and at the Army Materials and Research Center in Watertown, Massachusetts.

George and Louise provided a loving home for their children Louis and Linda in West Medford, MA where they lived for more than 50 years. George earned a Master of Religious Education Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary on May 27, 1988 and was an ordained Minister of the Gospel. As an active Associate Minister at Union Baptist Church in Cambridge, MA, he loved to teach bible study and sang in the Gospel Chorus. He later became the Assistant Pastor at Christ Temple Church in Roxbury, MA. He loved Jesus and was bold in sharing and preaching the Gospel of Christ. He enjoyed horse back riding, ice skating, swimming, shoveling snow; which he did well into his 70's (a true New Englander), and telling stories. His passion was sharing the Gospel. He published a book called Battlefields in The World and in Christendom.

Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Edmonds, and his granddaughter Alexandria Loutrice Winbush.

George, leaves us physically, but his vigorous love of Christ, the Gospel, and his loving spirit will forever be cherished by: his loving wife, Louise D Battle; son, Louis Battle (Catrina); daughter Linda Battle; four grandchildren, James “Alex” Winbush, Sydney Battle, Courtney Battle, Avery Battle; cousins, James Banks, Herman Banks, Cordelia Banks, Mildred McKenzie; and a host of cousins, friends and loved ones.
